Anime has a bad reputation for being full of fanservice and other inappropriate content. While it’s true that a lot of anime does have inappropriate content, a lot of it doesn’t. It can be tricky to find online recommendations that match your version of clean. My version of clean means a PG-13 rating. Anime does tend to have bath scenes, even in clean anime, but for me to consider it clean, you should be able to skip those scenes without missing anything material, and if you choose to watch the scenes, you see nothing personal. Below, I’ve listed a few of my favorite, clean, anime and what each is about. All of these can be found for free on Crunchyroll.
Watch A Place Further Than the Universe on Crunchyroll.
Black Clover
This is one of the cleanest anime I’ve ever seen. It's a tale of a land filled with magic. Magic is the most important thing in this country. Asta is a boy born without magic but he hopes to become the wizard king. This anime tells the tale of his journey. There are a lot of great fight scenes in this show that I really enjoyed. I believe it does have one scene in the first couple episodes where Asta walks in on his boss taking a bath. Nothing is shown or alluded to, and you can skip the scene if you want.
School-LIVE
I watched this entire series in a day. As far as I can remember there's no fanservice or inappropriate content. It does get a bit dark, mostly because it’s about zombies. In this show, there are survivors of a zombie apocalypse hiding together in a school, and it's about how they live and enjoy life in such a dark world.
Angel Beats
This show is about people in the afterlife. However, this is not a peaceful afterlife. In this afterlife there's an avenging angel. The main character, Otonashi, joins a group of teenagers to fight against the angel. It has great character development, though at times it can be a bit violent.
Anne-happy
I really liked this show because I find it funny. A lot of people don’t like it for the animation style or because it’s not their style of humor. It’s about a group of students at a school who all have horrible luck. The school is there to reform their lives and make them happy and lucky. The most inappropriate part is there is a girl is in love with a construction sign.
A Place Further Than the Universe
This is a fun slice of life anime without fanservice in it and it also involves a great twist. This is a good, relaxing anime to watch. There aren’t any fight scenes and it’s one you would watch for plot and character development. When a girl’s mother dies in Antartica, she vows to follow in her mom's footsteps and go to Antarctica too. She has been teased her whole life because of her dream until one day she meets a girl named Kimari who has always wanted to have an adventure of her own.
While a lot of anime has inappropriate content, a lot of it doesn’t.
