Tip #1 - Don't wait to be told what to do

Yesterday, I was talking with a friend who is trying to navigate through a career transition in his life.  He has a good job, but has been investing in a soon-to-be restaurant where he will be the head manager and part owner.  Unfortunately, the start-up process is taking longer than expected and his current employer just offered him an excellent promotion in a different branch of the company, one that would take him out of state and out of reach of the new restaurant.  A difficult decision to be sure!  However, he keeps waiting for someone else to tell him what he should do.  He's in limbo hoping someone will make the hard choices for him.  But waiting around for others to do the decision-making for you may cause you to miss an opportunity.  To make smart decisions that are right for you, you must look inside at what you value most and then make the leap accordingly.

Tip #2 - Know when to seek counsel

Sometimes it’s difficult to make a responsible decision by yourself.  When you come to a decision that you don't feel like you can properly make on your own, it’s wise to seek counsel. Even the President of the United States seeks counsel from his Cabinet. Remember that, naturally, you see things from your own vantage point, so having a third party offer perspective from outside of the situation can help you see things you may not have considered.  There is an ancient biblical proverb that says, “plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.”  Know when to seek counsel from wise friends and family for smart decision-making.

Tip #3 - Take Action!

Fear of making the wrong decision does one thing - it keeps you stuck in the same place!  It’s okay to not know where your life is headed, but if you choose to move forward, you give yourself the opportunity to end up in the right place.  A ship at anchor cannot move forward in any direction, let alone the right one!  Whether it's seeking wise counsel or embracing the responsibility that your life choices are ultimately yours to make, the bottom line is to make a decision. After all, if you're moving, you can always change your mind and still have momentum to see you through. So today, begin the journey of smart decision-making and set sail; you never know what new lands you might discover until you do!
