Your Writing is Your Fingerprint

As you no doubt already know, writing can be either personal or impersonal. But did you know that it is always communicating information about your real self? And as such it is more than the mechanical means of sharing one's thoughts, it is also a way to telegraph the hidden depth of your personality. Perhaps for this reason, we are deeply enamored with some writers and abhorred by others who are just shitty people. That's being said, if you want to write well, you better read and learn from the best examples. Besteller list items, anything by Hemmingway, and even New York Times op-eds are your best bet to become a better, more engaging author.

Just as there are noteworthy things you should mention in your writing, so are there horrible things you should avoid like plague. Ahead are 5 don't of writing you should studiously avoid boosting your chances of gripping your reader's attention and making a great impression

  • 1.Do Not Plagiarize
  • This one is as self-explanatory as it is important. Whereas it is okay to use wow types of essays for inspiration, you should not copy and paste them directly, no matter how tempting it is.
  • 2.Do Not Pander
  • Do not write about what you think the audience wants to read. Instead, be as candid and direct as possible. Try to stand out by being your true self.
  • 3.Do Not Procrastinate
  • Do not postpone your writing until the last moment. Otherwise, you won't have enough time to execute it at the expected level of quality.
  • 4.Do Not Be Too Personal
  • It is generally not the best of ideas to wax poetic about your romantic life or describe in detail your illness. The same applies to confessions of all sorts.
  • 5.Do Not Be Overconfident
  • Nothing repels as effectively as a relentless show-off. While it is normal to broach the subject of your knowledge and skills, it should not come off as bragging.
I have trained my mind, over many years, to write during work hours. The end result of my efforts is a pleasingly consistent impulse to the laptop and word processing software, every weekday at about 8 am. Weekends are okay too; I can't hold even if I'm not getting paid. Federal holidays falling during the week do present some difficulty, as my creative impulses are apparently oblivious to calendars. Alas, that is neither here nor there. The point is, 8 am comes around and I'm heading for the table. I know deep in my heart that the normal-sized table is more than sufficient for my space requirements, but I like having the option to stretch out, so I usually take the larger chair, rationalizing that there us nobody on my floor who needs it. This hasn't led to any issues yet and I'm confident in my abilities to pinch it off and relocate to the adjacent, smaller table if the need ever did arise. This isn't about table though. The defining feature of my writing session is comfort, which I might stress, translates into the quality of the end product. So please, feel comfortable and treat your writing with respect because both you and your readers deserve it.

I am an aspiring poet and aspiring freelance writer. I was wondering about how to maintain an authentic persona without oversharing. Are there any tips or examples you can provide me so I can avoid oversharing? Also, this post is really informative! Thank you for sharing your tips.
