The living room is the hub of a home.  It’s where we entertain guests as well as relax after a long day.  Since this is where you'll likely spend a lot of your time, you want to create an environment where you feel comfortable and that reflects your personal style.  I’ve always had a love for coastal décor because it reminds me of being at the beach and relaxing.  This is why I chose a navy and sand color palette for my living room.  As an organization and style expert, below are my favorite tips when decorating your living room.

Lighten Up

I like to start with a light-colored base when decorating a living room.  Keeping large pieces of furniture neutral help give the room a luxurious feel while making the room seem much larger.  If white colored furniture scares you, you can use varying hues of neutral colors, like pale gray or tan.  Keeping your furniture light is also helpful if you like to change up your décor often.  It gives you the freedom to change accent colors with the change of seasons or just a change in mood.

Mix it Up

Don’t worry about trying to match every style and color in the room perfectly.  Rather, personalize your space by using an eclectic mix of furniture.  Try contrasting pieces of furniture mixing traditional with modern elements or formal and casual pieces.  I’m a strong believer in mixing up the type and style of furniture pieces in any space.  I like to blend traditional and industrial styles by using an iron side table to balance a soft neutral-toned sofa in addition to warm, rustic, wood elements in a room.

Be Bold

Bring touches of your favorite color into your living room, a great way to do this is with pillows and rugs.  You can easily change up throw pillows to add a pop of color to your living room with different accent colors and patterns.  I added some color into my living room by selecting different shades and patterns within the same color family for my throw pillows.  A bright rug can help neutral furniture stand out more and balance out more formal furniture with its playful and casual feel.

Keep it Bright

Lighting is the best way to make your living room feel welcoming and open.  Natural light reduces the need for additional lighting so try to avoid blocking windows and allow light into your room. Table lamps and candles provide a warm ambiance and can change the mood of the room in the evening.  Mirrors can amplify light in the room and make a room appear double its size!

Get Personal

Gathering living room ideas is a great starting point when beginning to decorate.  However, make sure to add personal touches and items that make you smile.  Whether you are a collector or recently purchased a great piece while on vacation, having it on display makes for a great conversation starter.  Using meaningful accents to personalize your space not only add character, but also make the room feel cozier.  The best decorating advice I can offer is to decorate with things that you love!
