I am always looking for ways to update my style for the changing seasons, but sometimes it feels like I would have to forgo rent to stay on trend.  Luckily I’m a pretty crafty gal!  I discovered that with a few simple steps it’s easy to update last year’s looks to this summer’s on-point style.

Trimmed Shorts

One of my favorite looks this season is trimmed shorts!  Be it a sweet lace trim, a sassy string of pompoms, or a classic scalloped hem, embellished shorts are must-have this summer.  Update your own shorts like these shorts from Free People at a fraction of the cost.

The Update:

Take last year’s high-waisted denim cutoffs and update them with lace or take a pair of loose fitting, brightly colored shorts and add some pompom trim.  Using a little bit of fabric glue (make sure it is washing machine safe) add your trim to the bottom of your shorts.  You can hand stitch it for extra hold. If you are not super crafty, that’s fine too! Your local tailor will be able to stitch it on for you at a low cost.

Patched Jeans

Nothing quite says “relaxed” like a pair of patched boyfriend jeans.  Patched knees are all the rage.  Designers like Madewell are all about the patch this summer.

The Update:

Take last year’s boyfriend jeans and update them with some chic patches.  You can take denim from old or ill fitting jeans, cut out some cool rectangles, and apply them to a pair of jeans for a cool update! Add your personal style, mix it up with all over patches, or keep it clean and simple with patches just at the knees.  I also like playing with color and patterns. Add a cute floral patch to denim, or black to a pair of olive cargos.  Again, you can either use washing machine safe fabric glue, but I prefer hand stitching to give it an even cooler vibe.  If sewing is not your thing, the tailor can help you out!

The Midi Skirt

Last year’s Maxi has become this year’s Midi.  But don’t fret it’s easy to update your look.  A simple hem will take your Maxi from ‘13 to ’14.  Be it a flowy skirt like this one from Zara, or fitted like this skirt from Revolve, it’s easy to update any style maxi or high-low skirt into a chic and classic Midi.

The Update:

I recommend using a tailor for this one!  Simply find a length that works for your proportions (usually about an inch or two below the knee) and have a tailor hem your skirt to that length. Pair your new skirt with your favorite pair of strappy sandals and you are ready to hit the streets with some hot new style.

Keeping up with this year’s trends doesn’t have to cost a fortune.  Look cute using these updates and use your extra savings towards a weekend at the beach!  Happy summer!
