Ignoring the Noise

I have more gluten-free friends than I can count, and I know so many vegans I struggle to do my own grocery shopping for fear that I will have company and be unable to play the role of hostess with the “mostess.” My mother worships Dr. Ann’s recipes, while my sister will soon be starting on a diet consisting of only natural sugars. My nearest and dearest are comprised of vegetarians and paleo-diet enthusiasts, and as for me…well, it’s safe to say, I’m overwhelmed! With so many trendy diets, cleanses, and ways of holistic living floating around these days, I constantly find myself beating my head against a wall wondering which path to wellness I myself should prescribe to.  My friends and family all swear by their various be-all-end-all regimes, and I’m stuck trying to figure out which person and diet plan is actually supreme as I struggle to ignore the noise. I’ve been living in limbo, jumping from trend to trend based on who I was spending my time with, not necessarily focused on what would keep my body healthy and happy. However, upon picking up a copy of Clean Eats, written by New York Times best-selling author Dr. Alejandro Junger, my perspective on living a clean life has shifted forever.

Personalization is Paramount

“Clean eating isn’t just one thing. It is not a straightforward list of foods to eat and not eat. It is a way of thinking about food and how it makes us feel…what makes it work is personalization.” What a liberating concept! From cover to cover, Clean Eats advocates the life-enhancing benefits of clean eating by making a plan that works for your body personally. We all as humans are so uniquely individual; it should be no surprise that our diets work in the same way. Through an inspiring introduction, a collection of essays presenting the fundamentals of clean eating, over 200 delicious recipes contributed by advocates of the clean community such as Orlando Bloom and Gwyneth Paltrow, and finally, detailed meal plans to help readers get started, this book is a game-changer in regards to taking a personal approach to living well.

The Salty and the Sweet

If you weren’t hungry before you began reading it, I give you less than thirty seconds before you start salivating as you explore the pages of Clean Eats. Dr. Junger, who is also the founder of the wellness company Clean, partners with Frank Giglio, a seasoned chef and head of Three Lily Farm, to bring readers delicious, nutritious and accessible recipes. Vegan or vegetarian? Gluten-free or paleo? No problem! Whether you have been maintaining a healthy life-style for years or you’re starting with a “clean” slate, this fantastic read goes above and beyond in detail, to ensure that every recipe is easy to follow and contains alternate options to accommodate even the strictest of diets (though if you happen to be on one of those diets, you may soon change your tune after checking out the fundamentals of Clean Eating). Some of my personal favorite recipes from within Clean Eats include the crowd-pleasing clean and green guacamole, the Asian lettuce wraps, coconut poached salmon (which is a dish I have loved since it first appeared on Gwyneth Paltrow’s website), lemon-herb chicken burgers, savory raspberry lemonade, and finally, the salty and sweet homemade Snickers bar recipe (it’s actually too wonderful to describe). Hungry yet?

Uplifting and Obtainable

“Clean eating is an idea whose time has come, an idea that guides us toward a life of great meals and great health…Changing the way we talk about healthy diets can be used to help define what it means to eat clean.” Unlike other field guides to living and eating right that are so condemning in nature, defining one’s path to wellness by a series of “do-not-eats,” this book is both uplifting and attainable to even the most obstinate eater.   At the end of the day, as I finished the final lines of text, I was left feeling both positively challenged and hungry for whole foods, not belittled by what I’ve been doing “wrong” within the confines of my diet in the past.  This book helps capture the fundamentals on paper of what every person rightfully deserves - “health, validity and peace of mind.”

“This book is a celebration - a celebration of great-tasting food and of the power of whole foods to heal us…” What are you waiting for? bSmart, and accept the invitation Dr. Alejandro Junger and the whole clean community is offering you.  It’s time to celebrate the new, healthy you. Purchase your copy of Clean Eats today!
