Fashion Advice: Prepare to Look Good on the Go

Preparation is Key for How to Dress Well

Remember when your mother had you lay out your clothes the night before school?  That was actually a very good lesson in how to be stylish on the go.  Preparation is crucial for how to dress well and in avoiding those last-minute snap decisions that result in you hiding behind your desk at work asking yourself, "What was I thinking with this skirt and shoe combo?!"

My fasion advice to avoid any drive-by style choices is begin thinking about what you might wear the night before.  If you’re an "in-the-moment" dresser and like to see how you feel in the morning, set out a few outfits.  At the very least, you want to avoid bad combinations.  You know your wardrobe well enough to know which items belong together.  Make sure to set out your bag, too, with all the items you’ll need for the next day and any garments you need for an outfit change or enhancement should you not be able to come home and change.  If you’re wearing heels, always carry a pair of flats, especially if you live in a pedestrian city like New York.

Lastly, always check the weather.  You can look the most stylish you’ve ever been, but if you’re freezing cold due to an unexpected drop in temperature, you’re likely to look quite silly in that sleeveless dress.
