One Good Day

J.2.TW

She’s come for lunch, arriving early
in the old red Chevy,
the too-thin figure
in the soft blue jumper.
the knitted cap.

Daffodils in milk glass
yellow tablecloth,
squash soup,
a bit of butter floating,
salmon salad on romaine.

She’s started watercolors,
miniature beach scenes
with tiny gulls and feathers
of beach grass. She says
the rosary to help her sleep.

Her cup shakes a bit
from a new tremor,
tea splashes in the saucer.
Sun slants through birch,
touches the daffodils,
holds back the shadow,
