Girls Health Ed. is a national volunteer community-based effort, which seeks to educate girls 8-17 (grades 3-12) about their overall health. We exist to help girls and young women make healthy, informed choices throughout their lives by having teaching fellows from relevant fields teach seminars in metro area schools and community centers. We are different from other health-related organizations that serve young women because instead focusing on one particular aspect of a healthy lifestyle, we realize that true health comes from equal emphasis on many aspects. Our four modules are nutrition and body image, physical fitness, personal care/hygiene and reproductive health. We focus on girls and young women who are not able to obtain information about their changing bodies from their school or home environments. We instill confidence through knowledge and aim to ensure that girls walk away with a valuable reference they are able to use throughout their adult lives. We use health education to maximize the positive impact that girls and young women are able to have on their communities and empower them to change their lives for the better.

For more information, please visit www.girlshealthed.org

Girls Health Ed was founded by Sarah Hillware two years ago in DC in an effort to empower young women to make healthy, informed choices throughout their lives by holding seminars at local schools that encompass several aspects of health. The success of the program in the D.C. metro area has inspired us to expand to the NYC area. We are in need of teaching fellows to lead the workshops and instill knowledge and confidence in our girls.

Ideal Candidates:

· Are willing to dedicate 8 hours per month

· Can work with youth from diverse backgrounds

· Have experience working with youth

· Are knowledgeable about public health issues and/or are willing to learn

· Are able to communicate well as a speaker

· Are willing to serve as an ambassador for the program

Practical duties include:

· Flexibility to travel to metro area schools and community centers

· Ability to teach a skeleton curriculum

· Ability to incorporate one’s own professional experience into the lessons

· Ability to teach 1-2 hour seminars (at least 5) as needed for a one year period of time

· Ability to thoughtfully relay information to students on various levels of understanding

If interested, please send your resume to "Director of Operations" at girlshealthed@gmail.com with "NYC Teaching Fellow Position" in the subject line.

Engage Summer Scholars is a web-based summer research program that facilitates independent research for rising 9th through 12th grade students. We provide support throughout the research process, connect students with a community mentor, and provide scholarships for select participants. We do all of these things through our website by enrolling students, accepting submissions, and providing research tutorials online. The vision of Engage is to foster a love of learning in high school students regardless of their social position, academic achievement, or athletic performance. Participants choose the topic of their research (it can be anything!), design a project, complete the project over the course of a summer, and present their work at an end-of-summer seminar.

Ix Style was founded by siblings Francesca and John Kennedy, whose family is originally from Guatemala. They were always motivated by the poverty, violence, lack of opportunities for education and the alarming need for clean water in Guatemala.

On a flight to visit her grandfather in Panajachel, Guatemala, Francesca read Start Something That Matters by TOMS founder Blake Mycoskie. During that trip, Francesca saw children drinking toxic water in Lake Atitlan. She knew had to do something to help. Inspired by gorgeous, hand-woven Mayan textiles and leather craftsmanship, Ix Style was created.
